OSV Kids Illustration

For the premier issue of OSV Kids - a children's magazine designed by America's oldest Catholic publisher, Our Sunday Visitor - I was asked to illustrate a scene depicting Christ’s calling of the disciples. Perhaps one can infer from the oceanic aesthetic, but deadlines necessitated that I get this project done while on my beach honeymoon last October. The environment definitely made for good inspiration, though. In any case, if you look closely, you’ll see I incorporated a B plot in which several fish are taking advantage of the disciples’ distractedness in order to free one of their friends from the net. I like including little details like this because I believe that children are smart enough to pick up on such things and furthermore that most parents are not, therefore making the inclusion of such details a fun secret between me and the kids who spot them.
