The Ol' Factory: Soap for Men

Academic | 2018

Project Summary

The Ol’ Factory soap brand aims to fill the void of artisan soaps for men, while appealing to the male consumer’s romantic partner, who would most likely purchase. Building on a pun ("olfactory" refers to the science of smell) and styled after rustic woodcuts, each scent is modeled after a traditionally masculine archetype and includes three thematically-related scents: "Woodsman" smells like pine, campfire, and whiskey; "Pirate" like citrus, sea salt, and rum; "Knight" like rose, leather, and mead; and "Preacher" like chrism, incense, and wine.

This product line was designed in response to an academic challenge to create a new product line from scratch with entirely sustainable packaging. To meet this goal, the packaging is reduced to a simple wrap-around label, printed on recycled soap paper with single color soap dye. The soap paper--made by combining recycled paper with the refuse of the soap making process--dissolves in water when the soap is used, meaning there are no leftovers in either the original manufacturing or the use of the product.

"Jacob's skill and creativity makes his projects rich with technique as well as conceptually effective. Beyond the immediate eye-catching imagery, there's always something to reward patient investigation."
