Project Summary
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Back to the Future, Cinertain Drive-In & Events hosted a charity auction of refurbished skateboards ("Hoverboards") to benefit the Child Rescue Network. My piece was selected among the other featured works and was subsequently auctioned off at an event themed around the classic film.

When beginning this project, it was important to me that the broken skateboard provided by the competition be refurbished to a usable state - I wanted my piece to be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. After quite a learning curve, I was able to refurbish the cracked and badly damaged board into one which would be sure to get a good price at auction.
Keeping with my desire for functionality, I chose to incorporate grip tape (the textured surface on skateboards which allows for easier riding) into the final design. I cut the grip tape to look like asphalt, with stenciled holes cut through in certain areas to reveal the yellow and orange board beneath. This gave the impression of the classic "flames down the road" from the film.
On the underside of the board, I used spray paint to create the iconic arrow from the film's logo. The choice of medium allowed the wood grain texture to show through, giving the board a classic look, while also providing the water-resistance necessary for functional skateboard art.
