Angelus Magazine: California Missions

Cover Art | 2019

Angelus Magazine is a prestigious Catholic magazine published out of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, with a readership of 175,000 people each week. Inspired by the response to our first collaboration, Angelus commissioned me to design another cover, this one for an issue exploring the complex legacy of Saint Junípero Serra. Rolling with the prompt, I proposed and designed this retro travel poster-inspired ode to California featuring the missionary, the indigenous communities he encountered, and the subjects of the state’s Bear Flag (together symbolizing the spiritual roots of the state). Great care and attention was paid to depicting California’s Pane natives in authentic traditional dress.
