Sausalito Art Festival
I created a block print-inspired artwork for the Sausalito Art Festival's "Icons of the American Worker."
Inspired by the prompt to create artwork featuring icons of the American worker, I designed this block print-inspired piece featuring the original icons of the American Worker, the Tall Tales. The artwork is entitled Tall Tale Tapestry and features Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Molly Pitcher, and Johnny Appleseed building the flag with their respective labors. The finished artwork draws from American arts and crafts aesthetics as well as Soviet propaganda traditions. Each individual piece is 11x17 and can be rearranged in any order, but when combined, they create the abstract flag pictured here.
Labor Day, 2018
I built each figure in Adobe Illustrator using three criteria: first, each figure had to appear realistically even within a stylized space (ie, not cartoonish); second, each figure had to be knocked out from the background, for the sake of consistency; and third, each figure had to be interacting with both the stars and stripes of the American flag as part of their labor.
The finished vectors were then edited in photoshop to embody a block print-style artwork, complete with flaws, fades and ink splatters.
