God the Father and the Best Day Ever

Children’s Book Illustration | 2020

God the Father and the Best Day Ever was authored to help children develop a personal relationship with the first person of the Christian Trinity--God the Father--who can often seem sober, distant, and unapproachable. When the oldest Catholic publisher in the country asked me to illustrate the book, I jumped at the chance to bring the text to life and portray God in a new way.

During the process, a colleague of mine asked how I thought I could possibly take on the task of trying to draw God. My response to him was this: "I can't draw God, but I can draw what I want a child to know about God." This was the philosophy that guided me as I illustrated. I drew a big God. A strong God. A God who was simultaneously of and beyond every human culture. But most importantly, I tried to draw a creative God who actively revels in the messy artistic process of His own creation. He is not some distant deity, coldly zapping things into existence like a grumpy wizard. He is close to, intimate with, messy for, and rejoicing in His creation.

Each complex theological theme is depicted in a tactile, soft, and welcoming way for children of all ages and nationalities.

“This book sits in our living room at all times. Such a wonderful piece that centers our most trafficked room. It is so beautifully written and the illustrations are just gorgeous! I love to read it with my 9-year-old daughter and have read it to our baby cousin, as well. He sits quietly and listens to the entire book while gazing at the beauty on each page.”
