'Fight for Family Movie Night'

July 2021

I've designed several covers for Angelus Magazine over the years, but my favorite to date is actually this one, which accompanied a cover story entitled, "The Fight for Family Movie Night". The topic of the piece appealed to my psych background, as it argued that family movie night can not only be a fun source of entertainment, but a valuable and equalizing bonding activity. Rather than turn off or shun "objectionable" content in films, the article posited, parents would do well to use movies as an opportunity for conversation and a free exchange of ideas with their children. By doing so, the article claimed that parents could subvert the "tug of war" mentality that sometimes occurs when deciding what to watch as a family.

I really liked this message, but I also jumped at the chance to design one of the classic illustrations I would've loved as a kid. In the final illustration, I feature the hands of several classic movie characters all reaching for the remote in a kind of standoff, with candy and popcorn providing pops of color.
