Project Summary

Inspired by the first five words of the Bible—“In the beginning, God created”—the Created book project by Likable Art brought together 50 of the Catholic world’s leading creative minds to share five words of encouragement and inspiration with other creatives.

Modern Magi

Medium: acrylic

Set up as a strange and avant-garde Nativity scene, my “Modern Magi” piece depicts artists of many crafts and periods--from Andy Warhol to Disney legend Mary Blair--as well as their creative themes (note the octopus and Big Bird) approaching the birth of the Christ Child. The piece accompanied my essay “Don’t Worry, You Belong Here,” a meditation on the impostor syndrome in the artistic experience, and an affirmation of the reader’s own ability and calling to create.

The Song of Creation

Medium: digital

After I'd submitted ”Modern Magi,” the response was so positive that I was invited to illustrate the essay of another contributor: singer/songwriter Mike Mangione. This piece represents "the song of creation"--a major theme in his essay--and features a depiction of planet Earth in place of the guitar's sound hole. The piece was inspired by the sort of folk art commonly seen in blues houses in and around the southern United States and was rendered digitally rather than with traditional media.
